RJhog 1984 Playlist

Wow! I graduated High School way back in 1984. That was twenty-five years ago. That sounds like a long time, but it seems like yesterday. Maybe that's why I chose Foreigner's "That Was Yesterday" over "I Want To Know What Love Is", which was a much bigger hit. There are two songs on this playlist that I can't hear today without immediately thinking of 1984. First and foremost would be Van Halen's "Jump". Of course, it was from the album "1984". I also cheated a little on this one and included th… Continue

RJhog Colors Playlist

I was sitting around the other day, thinking about making a good playlist. Several things came to mind but I decided to do a playlist consisting of songs that mention a color in the title. Out of 14,000 songs in my iTunes library, I could only come up with about 25 or so rock songs that fit this playlist. That was surprising to me. I would have thought there would be more. I may have missed some based on other colors that are less known. I culled my playlist to 23 very worthy songs. The color bl… Continue

RJhog 1982 PLAYLIST

My biggest memory of 1982 is that I started my first year of high school at George P. Butler High School in good ole Augusta, Georgia. Otherwise, 1982 was a difficult year for me to create a playlist from. There were plenty of albums released, I just don't seem to have a lot of music from this particular year. Therefore, I only have 16 songs for this playlist. That's okay, because these 16 songs are still pretty good. Night Ranger (to this day one of the best bands in concert I've ever seen) and… Continue

RJhog 1981 PLAYLIST

A quick word about the 1981 playlist. This is an edited blog entry. I originally did a 1981 playlist before I decided to do playlists for all of the 70’s and 80’s, so here I have just changed a few songs and created this new playlist. I have 2 debuts on the list. The first is Stevie Nicks solo debut, “Bella Donna”. The second is Motley Crue’s “Too Fast For Love”. One of the songs I added was “Live Wire”, which is taken from that album. That’s a good song. I also added “On The Loose” by Saga. Kis… Continue

RJhog 1980 PLAYLIST

My playlist for 1980 only features one true debut, and that is by Loverboy. There was a debut of a new singer for an established band. That would be Black Sabbath, who released their first album with Ronnie James Dio. I didn’t know this way back in 1980. I have just recently developed an interest in this era of Sabbath. Of course, my favorite band Kiss released yet another classic called Unmasked (just kidding about the classic part). I remember listening to REO’s “Hi Infidelity” about a million… Continue

RJhog 1979 PLAYLIST

For my 1979 playlist, I only have one debut artist featured. That would be Pat Benatar. She was one of the few female true rockers that got any airplay around that time, and she would get a lot of that airplay for the next few years. Unfortunately, 1979 would be the last year that we would hear Bon Scott on lead vocals for AC/DC. Although Brian Johnson has proven to be a worthy replacement, I’ve always wondered what “Back In Black” would have sounded like with Bon Scott on vocals. I included “Ai… Continue

RJhog 1978

1978 was a great year for me. If you've read any of my previous posts, you probably know that Kiss is my favorite band. Kiss released 4 albums in 1978, sort of. Each member released a solo album at the same time. However, I feel like only 2 of those albums were good (Ace Frehley & Paul Stanley) so I only included songs from those two. 1978 also introduced us to 4 future classic rock artists (Molly Hatchet, Toto, Dire Straits and the big one, Van Halen). Bob Seger released Stranger In Town, w… Continue

RJhog 1977

Tragedy struck in 1977. We lost several members of Lynyrd Skynyrd in a plane crash only 3 days after the release of Street Survivors. I can only imagine how much more great music we would have gotten out of this great, classic line-up. On a happier note, my favorite band Kiss gave me two more albums (Love Gun and Alive II). Alive II had a 5 studio songs, and I included one of those (Rocket Ride) on this playlist. Meatloaf released Bat Out Of Hell, which is one of my all-time favorite albums. Fle… Continue

RJhog 1976

1976 is definitely my favorite year of the 70's so far. I think it was great that at one time bands sometimes put out 2 albums in one year. 1976 was no different. Kiss released what many feel is their best album in Destroyer, and followed up the same year with Rock And Roll Over (possibly my favorite). Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band put out a live album and a studio album. Nazareth actually trumped everyone by putting out 2 studio albums and a greatest hits collection. Kansas released Left… Continue

RJhog 1975

I can tell you right now that 1975 was an excellent year for rock and roll music. Once again, my favorite band (Kiss) released two albums. Aerosmith released Toys In The Attic which contained my favorite song of their's (Sweet Emotion). Nazareth released Hair Of The Dog. That album was so good that it was really difficult choosing which song to include in this playlist. I went with the title cut. Bruce Springsteen released his classic album Born To Run. My favorite all-time Styx song comes from… Continue

RJhog 1974

1974 was a landmark year for me and I didn't even know it at the time. I was 8 years old that February and had really just begun listening to music. Most of what I listened to was on the radio or from my sister's album collection. She also had a couple of 8 track tapes that I liked. The reason that year was so important was that my favorite all-time band released their debut and sophomore albums. That band was Kiss. I just didn't know at that time that they would become my favorite. It was tough… Continue

RJhog 1973

Well, another year, more great music. We welcomed four new bands into the rock world (Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Marshall Tucker Band, Aerosmith & Queen). Just those bands brought us about 5 excellent guitar players. I think this playlist speaks for itself. There isn't a bad song on it. The playlist is: 1. The Joker - Steve Miller Band (The Joker) 2. The Real Me - The Who (Quadrophenia) 3. Tuesday's Gone - Lynyrd Skynyrd (pronounced leh-'nerd 'skin-nerd) 4. She's Gone - Hall & Oates (Abandoned… Continue

RJhog 1972

Once again, 1972 was a great year for rock music. 1972 saw the release of debut albums from Jackson Browne, Blue Oyster Cult, Steely Dan, The Eagles and Peter Frampton. That's five pretty good artists right there. This particular playlist also includes my personal favorites by Carly Simon (You're So Vain) and America (Ventura Highway). It's funny because most of the time my favorite songs by a particular artist aren't always their biggest hits, but that's not the case for these two. The Allman B… Continue

RJhog 1971

1971 was another good year for classic rock music (I guess it wasn't classic rock back then, just rock music). We got the debut album by REO Speedwagon. We got what has turned out to be many folk's favorite album by the Who. Who's Next has so many great songs to choose from. I went with what I think may be the finest rock song ever written (Won't Get Fooled Again). Led Zeppelin released IV, which is my personal favorite Zep album. By the way, I wanted to go with something unusual off of that alb… Continue

Norskar Roots Rock Reggae & Metal & New Wave

May 27, 2009 http://norskar-workout-jams.blogspot.com/ Duration: 51 minutes (& 100 sit-ups) Calories: 997 The iPod seemed to want to show off it's enormous variety today, with the Shuffle mode taking me from Bob Marley to Ozzy, forgotten (for a reason) New Wave and a whole lot of Metallica during a workout that seemed to leave me about three pounds lighter. Bob Marley & The Wailers “Roots Rock Reggae” Nice long tasty reggae session to start off at a 125-strides-per-minute pace. I gues… Continue

RJhog SHINEDOWN

My favorite current band is Shinedown. These guys have put out 3 albums since 2003. They are Leave A Whisper (2003), Us And Them (2005), and The Sound Of Madness (2008). The only somewhat weak album is Us And Them. Everything else they have done is quite enjoyable in my book. They can rock out as well as slowing it down. As a matter of fact, I think their ballads stand out. The band's playing is really tight and the lead singer (Brent Smith) has an incredible voice and I think he writes most of… Continue

RJhog Axe Men

My latest playlist is all about great guitarists. These guys can really play. They range from absolute shredders (Yngwie) to guys who play with tremendous soul (Gary Moore). This is far from a complete list of great players. Some are more well known for the bands that they play in and some are more known simply by their name. I tried to pick out my favorite songs by each of these guys. You may think some of my choices are crazy. Why in the world would I put a ballad by Ted Nugent on this list? B… Continue

Norskar A Truly Classic Rock Workout http://norskar-workout-jams.blogspot.com/

There have been some requests for more ‘Classic Rock,’ and my iPod’s shuffle mode recently delivered just that on a trip to the gym that burned more than 1,000 calories in 53 minutes of the ellipitical. The machine is what I used to call the ‘kick-ass’ one … It’s much harder than your standard, cross-country-motion device. Again (you can see the stuff that prompted complaints about my too eclectic tastes at http://norskar-workout-jams.blogspot.com/), and the following is a summary of what the i… Continue

RJhog WEEKLY PLAYLIST

Okay, I've never made a blog post in my life. I'm not even sure if I am doing this correctly, but here goes. I enjoy making playlists on a regular basis with different themes. For example, maybe a playlist with a Beatles theme, or an 80's theme, or even an easy listening theme. Each week (hopefully) I will post a new playlist with a different theme from the previous week. Each playlist will have between 12 and 20 songs on it. If you like the playlist, you can go to my page (hopefully by Tuesday… Continue
