“You Wanted The Best, You Got The Best!!” is yet another compilation album. The difference this time is that the tracks are “live”. I put the word in quotations because with Kiss’ track record, I doubt very seriously that they are entirely live recordings. Most of the tracks are previously released on “Alive!” or “Alive II”. There are 4 new recordings which, according to the credits, were recorded in 1975 (tracks 1-3) and 1977 (track 9). But I can tell you that track 1 (Room Service) sounds like it has Eric Singer on the drums. I could be wrong, but it definitely does not sound like Peter Criss. The tracklist is:
1. Room Service (Previously Un-released)
2. Two Timer (Previously Un-released)
3. Let Me Know (Previously Un-released)
4. Rock Bottom (Alive!)
5. Parasite (Alive!)
6. Firehouse (Alive!)
7. I Stole Your Love (Alive II)
8. Calling Dr. Love (Alive II)
9. Take Me (Previously Un-released)
10. Shout It Out Loud (Alive II)
11. Beth (Alive II)
12. Rock And Roll All Nite (Alive!)
13. Kiss Tells All (Jay Leno Interview)
As I said earlier, I just don’t think Peter is playing on “Room Service”. Otherwise, the track sounds very good. “Two Timer” sounds like it may have actually been recorded in 1975. My favorite new material is “Let Me Know” and “Take Me”. Those are both songs that I have always liked. The backing vocals on “Take Me” also don’t sound quite right to me. Track 13 is an interview by Jay Leno that is somewhat interesting to hear. I did enjoy the story about how Creem (the magazine) tricked them into taking a picture without their makeup. Some of Peter’s audio just sounds like he’s trying to keep up and fit in with Gene & Paul. Ace sounds like he knows that he doesn’t have to keep up with them.
In my opinion, this is just another way to sell 500,000 more albums. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy listening to the new tracks (although they probably aren’t exactly live), but why not just do sound check recordings of 12-14 more songs, dub in the audience and the raps by Paul, and call it “The Lost Kiss Concert”? Heck, they already dubbed the start of Alive! on to the beginning of “Room Service”.
