Kiss Alive III was released in 1993. That was 16 years after Kiss Alive II was released (1977). A good bit had changed about the band in 16 years. Ace Frehley and Peter Criss were gone. Eric Carr (RIP) had taken Peter’s place, then passed away in 1991. He was replaced by Eric Singer. Ace Frehley was replaced by Vinnie Vincent, who was replaced by Mark St. John (RIP), who was replaced by Bruce Kulick. Kiss had also removed the makeup and this was the first live album post-makeup. I’m not sure exactly what to say about this live album. I’ll start with the track listing.
1. Creatures Of The Night
2. Deuce
3. I Just Wanna
4. Unholy
5. Heaven’s On Fire
6. Watchin’ You
7. Domino
8. I Was Made For Lovin’ You
9. I Still Love You
10. Rock And Roll All Nite
11. Lick It Up
12. Forever
13. I Love It Loud
14. Detroit Rock City
15. God Gave Rock ‘N’ Roll To You II
16. Star Spangled Banner
Well, the track listing is actually pretty good. They probably should have added a couple of songs. I think the Japanese release had “Take It Off”, which I would like to have seen on the US release. I really like the inclusion of “Watchin’ You” and “I Was Made For Loving You”. However, from what I understand, the latter was recorded at sound check. I know that’s not a first for Kiss, but it brings up another interesting question. Exactly how many more of these songs were recorded at sound check? If you listen closely, these songs sound very well performed, but I’ve never been to a Kiss concert that sounded quite so good. I realize that technically, a sound check recording is a live recording, just not in front of an audience, but I’m getting a little tired of being fooled. I’ll always love Kiss’ music, no matter what, but just be honest about who played on what and if live really means live. I’m gonna say that the production of this “live” album makes it about an 8 out of 10, but it’s more boring than the first two live albums.
