Ive heard, music from the bands that classic rock radio likes to play alot of (Journey, Styx, REO, KISS, etc) and Im looking for some more obscure stuff like one hit wonders. An example of a band I really like is Big Star. So bands like that as I enjoy this era but am kind of tired of the groups that the radio over plays from this era.
some stuff I listen to alot along this era are:
*Budgie ( you may recall Metallica covering Breadfan, well they have a ton of albums that are awesome, and you soon realize where Van Halen and Aerosmith got some inspiration)
*Starz - S/T, Violation and Coliseum Rock are out of this world albums
*Angel - pretty much anything other than the "Sinful" album
*Moxy - I & II are great albums. great canadian band. Much of the I album has Tommy Bolin playin killer lead.
*UFO
*The Sweet
*Foghat
*Humble Pie
I think these all have somewhat of an AOR feel to some of their albums.
Isaac, love this topic, as much as I love the mainstream AOR scene of the 70's, I think I like the more obscure stuff today, it held up better.
Heres a few more thoughts on this topic...
1 - Shooting Star. They might be a late 70's early 80's style band, but love their stuff
2 - Ambrosia. If you take away the top 40 hits your left with an interesting 70's progressive style band. They have some fantastic stuff
3 -April Wine. Specifically check out release like First Glance, Harder Faster, and Nature of the Beast
4 - Fastway. Say What You Will, when you hear this track you'll love them
5 - Head East. Flat as a Pancake is good, but lesser known Gettin Lucky and their Self Titled release are superior
